Cartuja & Isla Mágica: Family & Expo 92

4h 6 km●●

Cartuja island is the Seville of two Exhibitions: Columbus lodged in its monastery while preparing his voyages, Expo 92 was held here, and from the crossing of both eras came the theme park, the pavilions and Calatrava's Alamillo bridge. A family outing with monastery, contemporary art among pottery chimneys and the river's best sunset.

The route

1

Apartamento Esencia Sevilla

Route starting point. Leave the apartment towards the first stop.

2

Monasterio de la Cartuja (CAAC)

15th-century monastery where Columbus was buried. Now the Andalusian Contemporary Art Centre.

Tip: Free Tuesday to Friday afternoons (EU). The chimneys of the old potteries are the icon.

3

Isla Mágica

The city's theme park: seven zones themed on the 16th century and the discovery of America.

Tip: Open April to October. The Agua Mágica water zone justifies the day in summer.

4

Pabellón de la Navegación

Riverside museum about the adventure of navigation, with its leaning lookout tower.

Tip: Climb the Schindler Tower: the best view of the Guadalquivir and the centre at sunset.

5

Puente del Alamillo

The icon of Expo 92: a 142-metre pylon with no backstays, by Santiago Calatrava.

Tip: Back to the centre, bus C1/C2 stops at the door; on foot it's 35 minutes along the riverbank.
